Cypress Hill hasn’t released an album since 2010’s “Rise Up”, an album which was notable for containing minimal involvement from the group’s primary producer DJ Muggs. After a long drought the group has finally dropped a video for the single titled “Reefer Man” which as you can guess is about reefer, a topic that the group is very well-known for covering.
The song which came out earlier this year is part of the soundtrack to the DJ Pooh stoner movie “Grow House”. DJ Muggs produced the minimalistic beat while as usual B-Real took the lead on the vocals. A female vocalist assists on the hook of the track to provide a truly psychedelic vibe to it. I never quite understood why Muggs played such a limited role on “Rise Up” seeing as he played an integral role in the group’s success. Anyway, that aside it’s absolutely wonderful to know that the crew is back together and in full effect.
In an interview with Mass Appeal Sen Dog said “B was really into it. We hadn’t worked with him [DJ Muggs] for 9 or 10 years.” He went on to mention that the album has those “psycho vibes” that the group helped popularize and “Muggs is still DJ Muggs when it comes down to those wicked sounds and stuff like that” which is indeed evident in “Reefer Man”. The new album is titled “Elephants on Acid” by the way. The title was announced by B-Real more than a year ago and at the time of the announcement he told HipHopDX that “it’s pretty much in the finishing stages”.
There’s no word on the official release date of the album as of yet and not much info has been publicized yet so we just have to wait. Hopefully it will be out his year. So far it’s been a good year for hip hop and a new Cypress Hill album, coupled with the upcoming MC Eiht project, would help beef up the repertoire of west coast rap. Much like MC Eiht we should definitely expect something that only Cypress Hill can bring and it’s safe to assume that this will not be a trap album as we have never known the crew to be followers and conformists.
As for the “Grow House” movie he usual suspects appear in it, including Snoop Dogg, DeRay Davis, Faizon Love and a rather unexpected appearance by Charlemagne. It’s pure stoner fun and not the type of film you want to invest your time in if you don’t find weed jokes amusing.
